How to manage common children’s dental emergencies

Children’s active lives can put them at greater risk of dental accidents. Our children’s dentist in Mount Druitt is qualified and experienced to deal with common dental emergencies involving children and pre-teens.

Wearing a mouth guard when playing sports can reduce the risk of injuries, but it’s still important to know what to do and how to stay calm if the worst happens.

Toothache

A toothache is a common dental emergency for kids which we see. Once the pain becomes unbearable, your child will struggle to focus which can directly impact performance at school.

Although toothache is a common cause for dental pain, pain sources cannot always be easily identified, as there are many possible causes. Your children’s emergency dentist will determine the reason for your child’s pain and provide the most suitable treatment for the dental problem.

Cut or bitten lip

If lip bleeding continues for more than 15 minutes, talk to our children’s emergency dentist for advice or to make a same day appointment.

If your child bites their lip or it gets cut, you can manage the bleeding by applying firm pressure with a clean cloth or gauze. Bruising or swelling may be reduced by applying an ice pack.

Knocked out teeth

If your child loses a baby tooth, it’s still important to see a kid’s dentist as soon as possible.

If they lose a permanent tooth, there’s a chance it can be saved. Rinse the tooth gently, avoiding touching the roots, and try to place it back into the socket. If it doesn’t fit, place it in a cup of milk and contact us for assistance. You should visit a children’s emergency dentist within 1 to 2 hours.

Damaged braces

Broken braces may cause pain or injuries to children’s mouths, as well as affecting the success of their orthodontic treatment.

Sharp edges of wires should be covered with cotton to prevent injuries, but do not try to remove an orthodontic appliance yourself. Instead, contact us for emergency dental care.

Same day appointments

We are a skilled and responsive team who are ready to do everything possible to get your child out of pain. If you are in pain, call us now on (02) 9055 1735 for a consultation or to book an appointment. We reserve spots every day for children’s dental emergencies.
